The Department of Agriculture should renew its mission as “the people’s department,” as President Lincoln called it when he created it. That’s the argument made by Ricardo Salvador from the Union of Concerned Scientists and food writer Mark Bittman in a New York Times opinion piece last week.
Phil Lempert, the “supermarket guru” and food trends editor for NBC’s Today Show, describes the NYT article in this video in case you don’t subscribe or have used up your free reads.
This is wonderful work you’re doing with this blog, Cindy — kudos! Our fellow Climate Reality Leaders Dave Rhody (in San Francisco) and Tara Sitser (who was at last night’s SFV meeting) also keep climate blogs (I’ve linked to them here), and I encourage you all to join me in a small (but growing!) community of Al Gore–trained activists here on WordPress!
Also: You can log every single one of these blog posts as an Act of Leadership on Reality Hub under Blog Post or News Article.
Thanks for joining us at the meeting last night, Cindy, and I look forward to working with you in the chapter and here on WordPress!

Agreed, Cindy! I love WordPress — it’s a supportive community. Participating on each other’s blogs is the best way to inspire engagement on our own!
